The Canine Contingent

Martine's Dogs
Neat and tidy Molly

Molly is a fourteen year old Bearded Collie.  She's been part of our family since birth, as we owned her mum Cayley.  Molly is the sweetest dog ever - she loves EVERYONE and expects everyone to love her right back.
Molly in need of a hairdo
Now that she's an old lady, she has a few health issues - she has a couple of bald patches, which we have put down to a thyroid malfunction, so she is on thyroxine tablets.  Her skin has improved, and there seems to be a little bit of regrowth, but it's a very slow improvement.  She's had some symptoms of liver trouble, and she's on a special diet for that - Royal Canin hepatic diet, for anyone who wants to know!
She's also very deaf, and a bit blind, but if I keep her hair clipped out of her eyes, she can see a helluva lot better!
Molly loves going in the car and is a very relaxed traveller, which is a really good thing, otherwise I would have serious misgivings about bringing her with us.

Cinnamon not impressed with her Munster Rugby gear
Cinnamon is an eight year old cross between a Jack Russell terrier and some sort of rat, I think.  She barks.  Very, very loudly.  She also sings, especially to certain mobile phone ringtones.  If she wasn't my dog, I would probably hate her, but I'm afraid she is my little pet and totally spoiled.

Scampy

Scamp.  Ahh, Scampy.  I'm including her for completeness, really, but Scampy won't be coming to France.  Scamp is a seventeen year old ratbag, scruffball terrier.  She is coming close to the end of her days - she's stone deaf, almost blind, she's been incontinent for about a year now and the little leggies have trouble holding her up a lot of the time.  Decision day is very close now.  She was the coolest dog ever and the naughtiest dog ever, and the dog that our kids will forever associate with their childhood.  I could fill a book with stories about Scamp, and maybe someday I will.

Postscript:
Scampy was euthanased in our arms on Fri Sept 2nd.  She went very easily and peacefully.  We were in no doubt that it was the right thing to do as she had become very frail, confused and wobbly.
We consider ourselves privileged to have had her as part of our family from October 1993 until Sept 2011.

Cookie - our moment of insanity.  I saw a post on Facebook about a missing Jack Russell Terrier in Cork.  The following day, I was heading into the Farmer's Market with my daughter Aideen when we met a Jack Russell running along the road in a blind panic.  We pulled over and tried to catch her, but she bolted into a field of corn and disappeared.
On our return journey, we saw the dog again and made another attempt to catch her.  We tried enticing her with yummy fresh bread but that didn't work.  Expensive chicken liver pate, however, did the trick and we lured her into the car.  Once I got a closer look at her, I was pretty sure she wasn't the missing dog, but she was wearing a pretty collar and I reckoned someone must be missing her.  Sadly, I was wrong - despite posting her on the Munster Lost and Found Pet website and Facebook page, and on the Cork County Council's Pound's website, no-one has come forward to claim her.

She quickly developed a serious attachment to George, she just wants to be his shadow.  She's a smart little dog and a quick learner, and we've all fallen in love with her so she's coming to France too!

Lucky Cookie!

Anne's Dogs

It all started for me with the dogs when Martine's dog Cayley had an unplanned litter, utterly irresistible of course. But I had always wanted a German Shepherd, so we found Clyde down in Wexford, one of the gentlest sweetest GSDs on this planet, partly due I am sure to the fact that as soon as Cayley saw him she lay down and offered him the milk bar! So he stayed with the litter for a few days and then we brought him and Bonnie home. A partnership for life, they were devoted to each other.

But things don't always work out the way we plan, and sadly Clyde developed a lump on his kidney at the age of 9, and was euthanised. Bonnie was lost without him, so I brought her everywhere with me, even to work! A friend had found a lab/rottie cross and wanted me take him but I wasn't ready for another dog, even so I was invited to dinner, brought Bonnie with me and of course came home with Fionn in the boot. They soon became the best of pals and life went back to normal.
Bonnie and Fionn

Well originally I planned on bringing 3 dogs to France this year, as last year was so successful with two. The addition was to be my Guide Dog puppy in training, Roxy, but unfortunately the timing is all wrong and I will have to leave her behind, which I know is going to be heartbreaking, she is an absolute sweetheart.
Roxy
Bonnie is now 16 , 2 years ago she had a stroke and I thought we would loose her, but she made the trip to France earlier this year and had a ball. Sometimes I think she will live forever, but an operation to remove some rotten teeth set her back a lot, but with the help of our amazing vet, and steroids she is rallying, so hopefully she will travel again this yeear. Only time will tell.......
